People choose biology due to their interest in that subject. But once you have taken up this subject, you might be forced to take up medicine or MBBS for your future. Not all students can make a career out of this, They may have their interests and aptitudes in different areas of biology except medicine. The below-discussed courses are an alternative to those students who would like to pursue biology but not a career in medicine.
1.Bachelor in Botany
BSc Botany is one of the most established and one of the most common branches of science. It involves the study of plants, its structure, processes and growth. This course is an undergraduate course which extends for three years like any other degree courses. With a degree in this course, you could work in the agriculture industry, natural resources centres, environment consultancies, organic nursery manager and as a teacher. If you wish to join for higher education in the same field, it is also available. A student who has completed their class12 in the science stream can opt for this course.
2.Microbiology
Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms. It involves the study of organisms such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. The duty of the microbiologist is to examine the effect microorganisms have on food and the environment. They can work as a safety officer in various government departments. The student has to spend 3 years on this course and once it is over he is awarded with a Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology. Students who had Physics, Chemistry and Biology in class 12 can be preferred for this course.
3.BioTechnology
Biotechnology is a broad area in biology that involves the study of living systems and organisms to develop or make products. Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is a three-year undergraduate course that focuses on genetics, molecular and applied biochemistry. This course allows the students to study DNA, RNA and it’s genetic manipulation and invent products and processes. This course is aimed at improving the overall quality of life. They get the opportunity to work as research scientists in a variety of research fields like agriculture, pharma, medical and research etc. Students who have graduated 12th std with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology from a recognized school board or equivalent examination are capable of applying.
4.Zoology
Zoology is a very interesting field for those who love to learn about animal life. This course deals with the animal kingdom, animal biology, wildlife conversation, animal behaviour and ecology etc. It also concentrates on how the animals evolved with the changes in their tissues, to cells and molecular structures. With the degree in zoology, one can find jobs as an animal breeder, zoo curator, wildlife biologist, marine biologist and so on. This is usually a three years’ degree course which is divided into six semesters. The students who have completed their class 12th in science from a recognized school board are eligible for this course. Usually, admission is based on the marks secured by the students.
5.Biochemistry
Biochemistry is also known as biological chemistry. It usually deals with the study of the chemical processes inside the living organisms. It is a laboratory-based science that assembles both biology and chemistry. This helps the biochemists understand and solve the biological problems in living organisms using chemistry. This course helps students to study about living organisms and the chemicals it’s built for such as carbohydrate, protein, enzymes, hormones, metabolism and many more. After completion of this course, students can work in the medical laboratory, pharma industry, food industry and chemical processing industry. It is a growing field with a lot of new opportunities waiting for those who finish their course. They can find jobs as a biomedical scientist, forensic scientist, toxicologist etc. Students who complete their 12th class in science stream can opt for this course.
