What is NEET Exam?

NEET- UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is an all India entrance exam conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency) for students who aspire to become doctors. Before NEET, the admission process was conducted through AIPMT and other exams conducted by multiple government as well as private institutions. The NEET exam has unified the admission process across the country’s colleges providing medical courses. The aspiring students can get into renowned institutes like AIMS, JIPMER and the NEET score is considered by the other medical institutions like government medical colleges, deemed universities as well for their admission procedure. To be more specific, NEET exam can get the students into other specific medical courses like BDS, AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) also.

Eligibility

The students who have attained a percentile of 50% in science subjects- physics, chemistry and biology have the eligibility to attend the NEET entrance exam. On the other hand, those who belong to the OBC/SC/ST and PwD categories require only 40% and 45 % respectively. The candidate must be at least 17 years old at the time of appearance of the exam. As of 2020, there are no upper age limits for appearing in the exam.

There are 15%, 7.5%, 10% reserved seats for schedules caste, tribe, and other backward communities and also for differently-abled candidates.

Exam Procedures

In order to apply for the exam, an application fee of ₹ 1500 is to be given by the students of general category. An application fee of ₹ 1400 and ₹ 800 is to be paid by backward castes and scheduled caste and transgender candidates. During the exam, the candidates are expected to wear light-colored, short-sleeved dress. Any kind of electronic device is banned from the exam hall. Those who need exemption in dress code should inform the authorities and take prior permission. The admit card is provided to the registered candidate which can be downloaded once it is published by NTA. The admit card is mandatory for entry in the exam hall. Any failure in producing the admit card will automatically lead to disqualification of the candidate.

Once the exam is over, the answer key is published and the candidates can have a clear idea of the marks they will achieve in the exam. This can help the candidate decide their future plans accordingly.

Exam Pattern

The exam comprises of 180 objective questions and the duration of the exam is 3 hours. The questions are divided in numbers 45, 45 and 90 between the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology respectively. The total mark awarded in the exam is 720 marks, the Physics and Chemistry section each has 180 marks each. Each correct answer will be rewarded with 4 marks and in case of incorrect an answer one mark will be deducted. The exam is held in off-line mode wherein the candidate is provided with a booklet comprising of questions and an OMR sheet to mark the answers. The question comes in 11 different languages including English and the candidate can choose the medium of examination during the registration process.

Admission procedure

Once the score is published, the cut-off is decided by NTA and an all India merit list is published. The counselling sessions are held for 15% quota of All India seats following which the sessions are held for central, deemed and private universities. During the counselling session, documents including NEET Rank Letter, ID Proof, 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates. Following which the candidates are accepted into multiple universities across the country into the courses like M.B.B.S, B.D.S, Allopathy etc.
